We all have dreams of what we want out of life. From the type of house we want to live in to the ideal the job or career we long for, the perfect partner and lifestyle, or the pile of travel brochures we have neatly stacked away for “when I retire” . Often we call them dreams as they are simply that – they are where are mind goes when life gets hard or tough, where we wish for things to be different and our dreams are the destiny of a life filled with happiness and joy. But often they remain wishes for the future and they never meet our reality of today. We get caught up in all the reasons why they are not possible or achievable or realistic rather than focus on what we can do to make them a reality.
So how do you make your dreams a reality? First think big, ask yourself what would you do if money was no object, you had the freedom to do anything, be crazy and out there. But then also look at what you want to happen in the next 5 years, the next year, next month…..not a to do list, but a dream list. I have an entire book filled with notes, pictures, drawings, whatever grabs my heart and I know is something I want in my life. Most importantly you need to really believe they are possible. There is no point dreaming about something whilst under your breath murmuring “like that will ever happen”. The key with dreams and visions, it helps to be clear. Set dates and timelines “By December 2012 I will have…..(fill in the blank)” Think about career, lifestyle, health, relationships, leave nothing untouched! They can be everything from “I am going to receive a bunch of flowers this week” to “I will secure my dream job of…..at (the company you want to work with)”.
Ask yourself “what is stopping me from achieving this today?” – if your dream is to run a marathon, maybe your fitness level is a barrier – great, you can start mapping out a plan to get marathon fit. Perhaps the idea of travel floats your boat, do you have the funds? Map out a savings plan with goals and milestones to help you reach your dream. Dreaming big and asking for what you want in life is a precious gift, use it and work towards it.
Establish what are your own strengths you can draw on and the things you can do today towards your goals of tomorrow and be honest and know your limitations (perhaps not wise to wake up one day and say I want to run a marathon and go and do it the next). But also recognise if you find yourself saying “I don’t have the skills to do ….” can this be overcome? Or is it simply an excuse and in fact a form of laziness that is preventing you from reaching your goals.
Dreaming can be exciting and scary as we start to really look inside ask “what do I really want for myself”. It can also bring attention to all of our beliefs about what is right and wrong, what I should or should not do and even what I deserve. Give yourself the permission to think “anything is possible” and go for it, you may even surprise yourself of what you come up with.
